What Is a Fixed Blade Knife? A Plain Guide

Two Damascus fixed blade knives of different lengths with their leather sheaths on a canvas backpack

A fixed blade knife is a knife whose blade does not fold. The steel of the blade carries on into the handle, so there is no hinge, spring or lock between your hand and the edge. Because it cannot fold, it is carried in a sheath rather than a pocket.

Fixed blade or folding knife?

Fixed blade Folding knife
Strength through the handle No moving parts Depends on the pivot and lock
Cleaning Rinse and dry Dirt and fat collect in the hinge
Carry Sheath on the belt Pocket
Ready to use Draw it Open and lock it

That is why fixed blades are the standard for hunting and outdoor work, and folders for everyday pocket carry. Carry laws for both vary by state and city, so check yours.

What is the tang?

The tang is the part of the blade steel that runs into the handle. On a full tang knife it runs the whole length and width of the handle, with the handle scales pinned either side, and you can see the steel along the spine and the butt. On a partial tang knife the steel stops partway inside the handle. Full tang puts more weight in the handle and suits large working knives. Partial tang is lighter and is the traditional build for a hunting knife around 10 inches.

What size fixed blade do I need?

  • 3 to 5 inch blade: hunting, field dressing, camp cooking, everyday outdoor work.
  • 6 to 9 inch blade: more reach for large game and camp work. Heavier on the belt.
  • Under 4 inches: worth knowing if your state or city limits the blade length you may carry.

What is a fixed blade knife used for?

Field dressing and skinning game, food preparation at camp, cutting rope and cord, carving tent pegs and feather sticks, and general cutting outdoors. It is a cutting tool: prying, hammering on the spine or splitting wood are how fixed blades get damaged.

What should come with it?

A sheath made for that blade, so the knife cannot slide out when you bend over. Leather is traditional; let it dry before the knife goes back in, because leather holds moisture against steel. Every Bigcat knife is a fixed blade with its own leather sheath, from the 8 inch Karambit Desert Fox to the 14 inch Patriot.
