A bushcraft or survival knife is the one knife you rely on away from everything else, so it tends to be larger, full tang and simple to maintain. These five are our biggest working knives: the Tracker and Tracker D2, both full tang with Micarta handles, the full tang 14 inch Patriot, the 13 inch Raptor and the 12 inch Leopard Hunter. What makes a bushcraft knife?

A fixed blade you can control for fine work, like carving notches, making feather sticks and preparing food, with a handle that stays comfortable over a long day. Many bushcrafters prefer full tang, where the steel runs through the whole handle, and a sheath that carries securely.

Bushcraft or survival knife?

The terms overlap. A bushcraft knife leans toward carving and camp craft, with a blade around 4 to 6 inches. A survival knife tends to be bigger, with more reach and weight, for a kit where it may be the only blade. The Tracker fits the first description, the Tracker D2 and the Patriot the second.

Which of these are full tang?

The Tracker, the Tracker D2 and the Patriot. The Raptor and the Leopard Hunter are partial tang, which keeps them lighter at 9.5 oz and 8.1 oz for their length.

The tracker pattern

Both Trackers have a straight section of edge near the handle, a deep belly toward the tip, a notched spine and a guard lug cut from the blade steel. The Tracker is 10 inches with a Damascus blade and 8.8 oz. The Tracker D2 is 12 inches with a 7 inch D2 blade and 13.8 oz, our heaviest knife.

A note on batoning

Splitting wood by hammering on the spine of a knife is common advice in bushcraft, and it is outside our warranty. Our knives are made for cutting, carving and camp work. For firewood, pack a small axe or folding saw alongside.
