Where are Big Cat knives manufactured?

Our knives are made in the historical city of Wazirabad, which has been famous around the world for its Damascus knives and swords since the invasion of Alexander the Great. They are handcrafted by skilled craftsmen who bring generations of experience and savoir-faire to every one of our high-quality hunting knives.

What material are Big Cat knives made of?

Out of the 35 knives in our catalog, 31 are made of Damascus Steel and 4 are plain-steel blades.

What is Damascus Steel?

Damascus steel is a famed type of steel recognizable by the watery or wavy light-and-dark pattern on the metal. It is made by folding multiple iron billets together, which leaves the blade extremely hard and flexible while maintaining a sharp edge.

Is this real Damascus steel? So many knives on Amazon advertise fake Damascus.

It is made of genuine Damascus steel and ships with a certificate of authenticity. Each blade is handmade by folding multiple iron billets, producing a blade that is extremely hard and flexible while holding a sharp edge.

What is the hardness of the blade on the Rockwell HRC scale?

Our Damascus hunting knives sit at approximately 58 HRC, with specific models (such as the Big Cat Bear Hunter Damascus — 15N25 and 1080, 288 layers) measuring in the 56–58 HRC range.

What wood is the handle made of?

Walnut wood.

How are the wood scales held onto the blade? What screws are used?

We apply a strong epoxy first, then secure the scales with screws to complete the process.

Are the blades heat-treated?

All our blades are heat-treated to ensure that they can hold the edge for a long time. The process is done with a naked blade, without a handle and fitting. It is a specialized job, performed by our expert knife makers in a furnace of high-temperature coal or oven.

In which sizes are Big Cat knives available?

I live in Connecticut, where the maximum legal blade size is 4 inches. Do you offer a blade that meets that limit?

Yes — we have a smaller model with a 3.65-inch blade: our Karambit knife, available in our brand store. Let us know if you need any additional information.

What is the purpose of the hole on the blade?

The hole is for a lanyard or any other rope, in case you want to hang your knife.

Is the knife and sheath I receive exactly the same as what is shown in the product pictures?

Because all of our knives are handcrafted, there may be slight variations from one knife to another. However, the design, quality, and dimensions will match what is shown in the pictures.

What can I use Big Cat knives for?

Our knives are designed for all the tasks required while hunting — skinning, gutting, and more. Their versatility also makes them perfect camping gear.

Can I chop wood with this knife?

Yes, you can use it to chop wood. Just be sure to follow all cleaning instructions carefully to protect the Damascus steel from rust.

How do I keep my knife in perfect condition and prevent rust?

Damascus steel, because of its carbon content, can rust if exposed to humidity. That is why your knife arrives carefully packaged and coated in oil to preserve its quality. To keep it rust-free:

• Clean and dry the knife after every use.
• Lubricate the blade with wax or mineral oil (castor, coconut, or paraffin oil work well).
• Do not store the knife in the sheath. If you must, first wrap the blade in plastic or a plastic bag to protect it from moisture in the sheath.

Was I supposed to rub off the oil the knife came covered in? What is it for?

Your knife ships covered in oil to prevent rusting during storage and transit. Our steel is high in carbon, which makes it stronger but also prone to rust when exposed to moisture. You can wipe it down before use — and we recommend reapplying oil after each use to keep it protected.

What angle should I sharpen my Big Cat knife at?

We recommend sharpening our Damascus hunting knives at an angle between 22 and 30 degrees.

Where can I buy a sharpening stone, and what grit should I look for?

Our manufacturer recommends a 6000/1000 grit stone, which you can buy on Amazon or at any hardware store.

What sharpening materials do you recommend for D2 steel?

To sharpen D2 steel, you can use either diamond sharpeners or ceramic crock sticks.
